Solid bench for a decent price!
5 Stars
Solid bench for a decent price!
First, a list of modifications I did to this bench:*Stitched new seat covers using heavy duty purple glitter upholstery (girlfriends favorite color)*Added new padding under the seat back and bottom (existing foam doesn't provide much cushion!)*Added a layer of 3/4" plywood to the factory seat base and backrest, nearly doubling the thickness.....quite possibly overkill and not needed (2019 version has new supports welded under the seat cushion to prevent the seat bottom from flexing and breaking)*Added new 4" diameter foam rollers (covered in matching vinyl) to front pegs since the rubber grips (supplied) hurt your (bare) feet during use.*Drilled rear crossbar for 1/2" eye bolts with fender washers so exercise bands could be used with this bench*Attached a 5" cable to the bottom of the seat and the other end to the pull pin (used to set the front leg out or fold it up for storage)Possible future mods:*Remove silly rear end caps with small built-in roller wheels, replace with welded brackets and skateboard wheels for ease when rolling bench over carpet and area rugs.*Modify front peg/foot rest threaded bracket so threads don't strip out (common complaint due to ridiculously thin metal which has been tapped for screw threads. (DO NOT CRANK DOWN HARD WHEN TIGHTENING KNOB FOR FOOT REST/PEGS ADJUSTMENT!!!)First off, I bought this in early Dec. 2019 for my girlfriend as an Xmas present. I wanted something inexpensive, but something I could modify a little bit (personalize and/or improve if there were weaknesses). I didn't set my expectations high, and I ended up being very impressed with this bench after a few changes. The broken seat complaint was the only thing in the reviews that turned me off before buying the Fitness Reality 1000, but I already knew I was going to stitch my own heavy diner grade vinyl seat/backrest covers and add better padding to the seat and backrest as well, so I added a layer of 3/4" plywood, just to be safe. No sense spending $50+ on vinyl and replacement foam, only to have the seat base fall apart months or years down the road! However, as I noted below, I strongly believe the 2019 version that I received already has the added support/welded reinforcement that now prevents the seat bottom from breaking as others experienced in the past. If you planned to add a new vinyl cover to this bench, I would add new 1" medium to high density foam while you were there, but I don't think modifying the backrest or seat bottom bases with plywood (as I did) is needed.Bench incline/decline/flat settings.....in degrees, checked by me with a magnetic protractor/angle finder. The front leg of the bench has 3 settings, one with the leg folded for storage, and 2 with the leg extended for use. The 2 adjustments during use will give you an approx 5 degree difference of adjustment if you leave the backrest in one position and simply move the front leg all the way forward, or slightly back to the 2nd (rear) setting. If you pin the front leg in the most forward position, you get approx 81 degrees of total incline on the backrest, or 76 degrees incline on the leg's second setting. Adjust the backrest down one stop and you get 60 degrees (or 54 degrees/2nd setting), 3rd stop going down the backbone of the bench gives you 45 degrees/40 degrees, 4th stop gives 20/15 degrees, 5th stop gives a flat (zero degrees) or -5 degrees, and the last (decline) position gives -15 or -20 degrees depending on where you place the front leg of this bench. Other reviews are correct pointing out the missing stop that should have been welded on at the factory, which would give you another incline option of around 30 degrees, but it's not a deal breaker. The foot pegs which are used to hook your feet under during certain exercises aren't very comfortable to use if you workout bare foot ( and we do!). I added a pair of 8"long/4" diameter foam rollers with a 23mm center hole from Ader ($12/pair) for more comfort. https://www.amazon.com/Ader-Sporting-Goods-Roller-23mmID/dp/B003SB4RAM/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=leg+extension+foam&qid=1578556646&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-5I can say personally that I've used this bench a dozen times myself for 1 hour long workouts (Santa had to break in the bench before wrapping it up!), and I did seated shoulder presses with 50 lb dumbbells and chest presses with 65lb dumbbells just to check the bench's stability, and I have no complaints. I also did crunchies with the bench in full decline position, since I know my GF likes doing crunchies, and again, I had no issues with the bench (I'm 160lbs body weight). The foam rollers did make using the bench easier for me when doing crunchies.Overall, I would buy this bench again as I don't believe their is another bench comparable to this one for under $90. I have no doubt that my GF will get years of use from this bench with very little (or hopefully NO) issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed Criteria - Stability, Size, Simplicity, Comfort, Adjustability, Long-Term Expectancy!
Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2017
Specifically for the purposes of a home gym adjustable weight bench, I provide this a 5/5. I would probably place it about 4 or 4.5 if you intend to have more commercial use. The criteria for my decision include: Stability (5/5), Size (5/5 [6/5 if I could]), Simplicity (5/5), Comfort (5/5), Adjustability (4.5/5), Long-Term Expectancy (4.5/5) (Read further for details).

I have been lifting for about 4 years now and have had experience with gym equipment from several facilities, both higher and lower end in quality. I am 5'5" and tend to stick between 143-148 lbs when I'm focused on my strength training while maintaining my cardio conditioning. I use this bench with adjustable dumbbells that can range from 2.5 - 100 lbs each (I have personally not capped over 80 lbs each).

Stability: The stability of this contraption is evident from the moment you remove it from the box. Its welding is superb and trustworthy. It feels solid, and of what is already pre-assembled, well-tightened. Furthermore, I have been able to conduct body balance exercises off of nearly any part of this bench without a fear of it falling over or breaking. Thus far, it has displayed no sign of deteriorating on me from my workouts.

Size: Well, the dimensions are provided to you, so it should come as no surprise. However, the fact that it can be folded... that is extremely size efficient. I measured its folded dimensions to be 50" High x 24" Wide x 10" Long. This is the primary reason for my size rating. Overall, it can take up a decent amount of exercise depending on the setting of your seat (will also be addressed further). The backrest is rather long and while I'm clearly not the tallest individual, it should be able to support people well above my height. The seat has a wide surface area that has not conflicted with exercises in which I would generally prefer a smaller seat. Furthermore, when I need to move this around the house, whether I choose to utilize the wheels or carry it, it is extremely light for a weight bench.

Simplicity: The assembly was SIMPLE. I had to secure 5 separate screws. The bottom bars of the seat and backrest, and the leg bar. A total of 5 pieces secured: 4 of which are tightened with the provided wrench (2 per bar + spring and flat washers) and the last is the leg bar, which is screwed on with the knob attached to it. While I have mentioned the folding of this bench, I will mention it again with simplicity. Simplicity of transportation, storage, adjusting the incline/decline/flat status, and general placement; unbeatable. Also, the seat adjustment... also very simple with 3 advertised settings.

Comfort: This is soft and sturdy. You can feel its reliability and do not feel pain developing in hard rear-end as a result. It feels form fitting and its wider surface area is helpful for that.

Adjustability: Moving it from Incline to decline to flat to whichever way, you need only simply apply gentle pressure to raise the backrest, and move the support bar to the desired setting. As for the seat, you need only hold it steady, remove the pin, set the angle, and re-insert the pin. The leg bar, loosen and remove the knob, move to desired hole, re-secure. And again... Fold it up, roll it over to your preferred location for storage/space efficiency.

Long-Term Expectancy: During my inspection, I felt skeptical of the stitching used to bind the fabric to the bench. I was able to simply pinch a couple strands that came flowing out. Since I have used it for about a week, this concerns me, but even with regular use, I expect that the stitching will only really become a problem no sooner than 9 months out. Overall, the bench will still hold out for years on years on years (or so I expect). Furthermore, the wheels on the backrest bar are rather small. They require accuracy to get the best roll and do not seem to be a priority of Fitness Reality. However, as I mentioned, should this be kept in house and well-maintained, the wheels are still better than no wheels at all and help this adjustable weight bench to earn my rating of 5/5 for home gym purposes!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Bench for Home Use
Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2023
This Fitness Reality gym bench came well packaged and was not damaged upon arrival. The assembly process was quite easy as well as it only took about 35 mins. Once fully put together the bench not only looks cool but it functions properly. I have been using it for about two weeks and I have been able to get some solid workouts at home. The only downside so far, is that the Fitness Reality logo that is printed on the bench is slightly fading due to my sweat when I rest my head after bench pressing. But other than that I am satisfied with my purchase, and will continue to enjoy using the bench.
