Forty-eight survivors stumble from the wreckage of Oceanic Air flight 815, which has crashed on a desert island: Hurley is a man with a warm sense of humour despite the desperate situation; Charlie is a faded rock star with a painful secret; Sayid wrestles with the racial profiling directed at him by some of his fellow survivors; Jin and Sun’s foreign values and language cause much to get lost in translation, and Sawyer has an intense sense of mistrust for everyone around him. Michael’s just gained custody of nine-year-old son, Walt – but father and son don't know each other. Mysterious Locke harbors a deeper connection to the island than any of the others. Siblings Shannon and Boone constantly argue and young Claire is eight months pregnant and ill-prepared for motherhood. The leadership of quick-thinking doctor Jack and level-headed Kate is the best hope the group has for survival.

The discovery of a transceiver among the plane's wreckage and the thought that rescue could be imminent temporarily raises the castaways' spirits. But the island's mysteries continue to baffle with the discovery of handcuffs, a gun and an animal that shouldn't be able to survive in a tropical climate.

Jack and Hurley discover an alarming secret about Kate, as the marshal's life hangs in the balance. Meanwhile Kate, Charlie, Sawyer, Sayid, Boone and Shannon ponder the island's mysteries they've uncovered and worry that telling the other survivors will cause panic. Locke's befriending of Walt disturbs Michael.

Survivors are jolted awake in the middle of the night when wild island beasts invade the beach encampment. Kate and Michael join the mysterious Locke on a hunt for food and a shocking secret about Locke is revealed. Meanwhile, some survivors are horrified by Jack's plan for the dead bodies still scattered among the wreckage, and Jack sees someone in the jungle who might not have been on the plane.

Jack is near delirious from lack of sleep and struggles to overcome the haunting events that brought him to Australia and, subsequently, to the island. Meanwhile, Boone gets caught in a treacherous riptide, the pregnant Claire's health takes a bad turn, and a thief may have stolen the last bottles of water. Veronica Hamel ("Hill Street Blues") guest stars as Jack's mother.

Walt and the others are shocked when Michael is brutally beaten, but only the non-English-speaking Jin and Sun know the truth behind the attack. Meanwhile Kate, Jack, Sawyer and Sayid argue about where the survivors should camp - on the beach, where they're more likely to be seen, or in a remote inland valley where fresh water abounds – and Locke discovers Charlie's secret.

Charlie begins a painful journey of withdrawal from drugs, surprisingly aided by Locke, whose true motive for helping Charlie is a mystery. Meanwhile, survivors struggle to find and free Jack when he’s buried alive in a cave collapse, and someone might be secretly thwarting Sayid, Kate and Boone when they enact a plan to find the source of the French transmission.

Shannon's inhaler runs out and Boone believes Sawyer has the remaining three in his stash. When Sawyer refuses to give them up, Jack and Sayid resort to torturing Sawyer until he agrees to reveal the location of the inhalers. In flashback we hear Sawyer's story and find he is not who he says he is.

Sayid's life is placed in grave danger after he stumbles upon the source of the mysterious French transmission, the woman Danielle Rousseau (guest-star Mira Furlan). She was on the distress call and is found alive. Meanwhile, Hurley has a ridiculous plan to make life on the island a little more civilized. The plan involves golf clubs he finds in the debris, and it looks like it just might work. Lastly, we flash back to Sayid's childhood friend Nadia as well as his participation in hostage situations in Iraq.

Claire has a horribly realistic nightmare about her new baby being harmed or kidnapped. Flashbacks reveal Claire's backstory: the former boyfriend who got her pregnant, then abandoned her, and the psychic who convinced her to take the ill-fated flight that landed her on the island. Meanwhile, Hurley is shocked and confused when he discovers that one of the plane crash survivors, does not appear on the flight manifest.

Survivors wonder why Charlie and Claire have been abducted - and by whom - and a search party ventures into the treacherous jungle to look for the pair. Suspicions focus on Ethan Rom (guest-star William Mapother), who, it was recently discovered, was not a passenger on the doomed flight. Jack battles inner demons relating to his father, while Boone and Locke discover another island mystery.

Jack, Kate and Sawyer fight over possession of a newly discovered locked metal briefcase which might contain insights into Kate's mysterious past. Meanwhile, Sayid asks a reluctant Shannon to translate notes he took from the French woman. A rising tide threatens to engulf the fuselage and the entire beach encampment, and Rose and a grieving Charlie tentatively bond over Claire's baffling kidnapping.

When Locke learns that Boone wants to tell their "secret" to Shannon, Shannon's life is placed in sudden peril, and the shocking truth about her past with Boone is revealed. Meanwhile, Kate is puzzled by Sun's mysterious behavior and a hungry Hurley must repay a debt to Jin.

Violence ensues and a mysterious island beast makes a re-appearance when Michael and Locke clash over Walt's upbringing. Meanwhile, Charlie is tempted to read the missing Claire's diary, and Sayid enlists Shannon to help decipher the French woman's map.

After the missing Claire returns with no recollection of what has happened since before she boarded the doomed Oceanic flight 815, Jack and Locke formulate a plan of defense against her kidnapper, the mysterious Ethan (guest-star William Mapother), who threatens to kill off the other survivors one by one unless Claire is returned to him. Meanwhile, the disappointment Charlie feels when Claire does not remember him triggers recollections of a woman he had let down in the past.

Kate and Sawyer divulge dark secrets to each other while tracking a renegade boar that Sawyer swears is purposely harassing him. Hurley and Sayid worry that Charlie is losing it after facing a brush with death and killing Ethan with 6 bullets to the chest. A shocking prior connection between Sawyer and Jack is revealed in a flashback. Robert Patrick ("Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "The X-Files") guest stars.

When the raft the survivors have been building mysteriously burns down, Michael is convinced that Jin is responsible for the sabotage, which only further escalates their rivalry. Meanwhile, Sun stuns her fellow survivors with a surprising revelation and Boone gives Sayid a warning about Shannon.

When Hurley becomes obsessed with the French woman and heads into the jungle to find her, Jack, Sayid and Charlie have no choice but to follow. Hurley flashes back to the hugely life-altering experience he had before boarding the plane.

Locke thinks he's being sent a sign on how to get the hatch open, and he and Boone venture inland. Jack is reluctant to offer assistance when Sawyer begins to experience excruciating headaches and needs glasses.

Jack tends to a severely wounded Boone after Locke returns him to the caves. In the confusion, Locke slips away to deal with his guilt over the crisis. Meanwhile, Claire unexpectedly goes into labor while deep in the forest.

After another funeral, tempers rise as the survivors' suspicions of each other grow, and an unlikely survivor vows revenge. The events that landed Sayid on Flight 815 play out as he engages Locke in a psychological game of cat and mouse to uncover the truth about the mishap that claimed Boone's life.

Jack suspects foul play when Michael becomes violently ill while building the raft. The suspects include Sawyer and Kate, who compete for the last seat on the raft and do anything possible to prevent each other from getting it. Meanwhile, a secret from Kate's past is revealed to the other survivors on the island.

The French woman stuns the survivors when she shows up with a dire warning about "The Others'', while Michael and Jin ready the raft for sailing.

The castaways on the raft are surprised at sea by a strange boat. Meanwhile, remaining islanders try to blow open the hatch, and a visitor to the encampment might be a threat to Claire's infant son.

A desperate Michael sets off into the jungle to find Walt, but discovers that he is not alone. Meanwhile, Sawyer and Jin are ordered by their captors, the tail crash survivors, to take them to their camp.

Sawyer's wound becomes life-threatening as he, Michael and Jin make their way through the interior of the island with the tail section survivors, Ana-Lucia, Mr. Eko, Bernard, Libby, and flight attendant Cindy.

The harrowing first 40 days of the 23 tail section survivors are revealed, introducing Ana Lucia, Mr. Eko, Libby, Cindy, Bernard, and Goodwin – detailing the first terrifying days and battling the dreaded "Others."

Tempers flare when Ana Lucia and her group stumble upon Sayid and the other castaways.

Kate's original crime that started her life on the run is revealed. Meanwhile, the survivors lay one of their own to rest, Kate sleeplessly watches over a feverish Sawyer, and Mr. Eko has a surprise for Locke .

Mr. Eko interrogates Charlie about the Virgin Mary statue; Claire begins to lose faith in Charlie when she discovers his secret, and Jack is an interested observer when Kate gives the recovering Sawyer a much-needed haircut.

Jack, Locke and Sawyer get more than they bargained for when they catch up with Michael.

When Charlie's vividly surreal dreams lead him to believe Claire's baby, Aaron, is in danger, Locke suspects Charlie may be using drugs again.

When Claire's baby falls ill, she becomes determined to find out what happened to her to regain her memory during her captivity with the Others.

Sun wrestles with the thought of telling Jin a newfound secret that threatens to upset the entire balance of the survivors' community. Meanwhile, Locke enlists Ana Lucia to interrogate the prisoner in order to extract more information than he, Jack or Sayid could.

When the hatch suddenly takes on a life of its own, Locke is trapped alone in the bunker and is forced to enlist the help of an unlikely ally.

Hurley begins to think the island is affecting him in a very strange way, and Libby attempts to offer support; Hurley recalls his past in a mental hospital with his friend Dave.

Bernard tries to convince the survivors to build a S.O.S. signal with rocks on the sand, hoping to be seen by a satellite or an airplane. Elsewhere, Charlie assists Mr. Eko in building a church for the survivors.

Jack and Kate bring an exhausted Michael back to camp where he has news about "The Others". Meanwhile, Ana Lucia attempts to get the prisoner Henry Gale to confess to being a spy for the Others.

Mr. Eko enlists Locke to help find a secret location he believes houses answers to the island's mysteries; Henry Gale manages to escape from the hatch.

Michael's whereabouts during his 13 days in captivity in the "Others" camp are detailed; Michael tries to convince Jack to help him mount a search party for his son Walt still being held captive.

After discovering something odd just offshore, Jack and Sayid come up with a plan to confront "The Others" and hopefully get Walt back. Meanwhile, Mr. Eko and Locke come to blows as Locke makes a potentially cataclysmic decision regarding the "button" and the hatch.

A delirious Eko wrestles with demons from his past, while Locke and some of the other castaways head back to The Pearl – one of the Dharma Initiative's island stations – hoping to find a computer that they can use to locate Jack, Kate and Sawyer. Meanwhile, Jack doesn't know whom to trust when two of "The Others" seem to be at odds with one another.

Kate desperately tries to protect Sawyer from being killed by "The Others;" meanwhile, "The Others" plan to use Kate as a pawn to force Jack into performing surgery on Ben.

Hugo enlists Sawyer's help with an old VW van found on the island. Hugo's connection to the numbers in The Hatch is revealed.

Sayid, Locke and Kate find another Dharma station on their way to rescue Jack; Sawyer tries to get his stuff back in the camp.

Claire launches a plan to use migratory birds to send a message, but doesn't understand why Desmond keeps sabotaging it. Elsewhere, Sayid, Locke and Kate scale "The Others'" protective perimeter and discover their camp.

Ben tries to persuade a determined Locke to call off his destructive plan by offering him some of the secrets of the island; Kate's reunion with Jack does not go off as planned when she discovers that he has made a deal with "The Others".

Hurley begins to suspect that Sawyer may be involved in an island mystery surrounding two fellow survivors; Sun learns the truth about her past kidnapping attempt by "The Others".

With their secret location now compromised, "The Others" abandon camp, taking Locke with them but leaving Juliet behind, handcuffed to Kate in the middle of the jungle.

Desmond's latest vision suggests that his old girlfriend, Penny, will crash-land onto the island, but his vision also reveals something about Charlie. Desmond organizes a posse to go into the jungle, expecting Penny to parachute onto the island.

An unlikely person helps Desmond save the life of a mysterious woman who crashes onto the island, and Juliet helps Sun find out whether she conceived on the island or before the plane crash.

A newly focused Locke breaks away from “The Others” in an attempt to persuade Sawyer to help rid them of a great nemesis that has caused nothing but pain in both of their lives. A new island inhabitant discloses some shocking information about Oceanic Flight 815.

Ben begrudgingly begins to introduce Locke to the secrets of the island, beginning with the mysterious Jacob; Juliet's secret becomes public knowledge.

Desmond has another vision of Charlie's death, but this time his death ultimately will result in Claire's rescue. Meanwhile, the survivors discover that an attack by "The Others" is even more imminent than originally expected.

Jack and the castaways continue their efforts to make contact with Naomi's rescue ship, in Part 2 of the season finale of Lost.

Charlie's dying message casts doubt on the motives of the people Jack believes to be their rescuers. A power struggle ensues between Jack, who wants to leave the island, and Locke, who thinks that they're supposed to stay.

The surviving members of the supposed "rescue team" are scattered around the island after a helicopter problem. However, once they are located, they reluctantly reveal that they are not there to rescue them.

Locke's hostage may be the key to getting off the island, so Sayid and Kate go in search of their fellow castaway in an attempt to negotiate a peaceful deal.

Kate goes behind Locke's back to arrange a meeting between Miles and Ben, where Miles offers his terms for not giving Ben up to his colleagues.

During the helicopter ride to the ship, Desmond's consciousness begins jumping back and forth between present day 2004 and 1996. He is forced to find Daniel Faraday in 1996 in order to get answers and stop the jumps.

Juliet receives an unwelcome visit from someone from her past with orders to track down Charlotte and Faraday in order to stop them from completing their mission by any means necessary; Ben offers Locke an enticing deal.

Juliet exposes Sun's pre-island affair to Jin so that they won't defect to Locke's camp. Sayid and Desmond meet the ship's captain and discover that Michael is working on the boat.

Michael's journey from escaping the island to working as Ben's spy on Widmore's ship is revealed; Ben tells Danielle and Alex to leave Locke's camp and go to the island temple, but they are ambushed on the way.

Sawyer perpetuates a lie with some of the other island survivors in order to protect themselves from mistakes of the past.

When some old friends drop in unannounced, Sawyer is forced to further perpetuate his lie in order to protect them.

Things begin to unravel when one of the survivors goes rogue and takes matters into their own hands, risking the lives of everyone on the island.

Kate goes to extreme measures to save Ben's life when Jack refuses to help. Meanwhile, Kate begins to tell the truth about the lie in order to protect Aaron.

To atone for sins of the past, Ben must attempt to summon the smoke monster in order to be judged.

Suspicions about a possible breach intensify after Ben is taken from the infirmary, and a reluctant Miles is forced to work with Hurley.

On the 100th episode of the series, the time of reckoning begins when Daniel Faraday comes clean regarding what he knows about the island.

Sawyer buries Juliet and is told by Miles that she had meant to tell him that “it worked”. Hurley, Jack, Kate and Jin set out to find the Temple in order to save Sayid’s life. On their way to the Temple the group is captured by "The Others". They are brought to the Temple at gunpoint, where they are confronted by Dogen, the mysterious and commanding leader of "The Others".

The episode opens with the passengers on board flight 815. The plane hits turbulence, but flies through it. The characters interact with their fellow passengers, which now include Desmond. The plane lands safely and the characters go their separate ways. We also see events on the island immediately after the explosion. Sawyer, Kate and Miles attempt to rescue Juliet, who's trapped after the detonation of the bomb. They appear to have traveled through time as they're not at the Swan worksite, but at the exploded hatch. Jin appears, announcing that Sayid is wounded. Jacob's ghost appears to Hurley and instructs him to save Sayid by taking him to the Temple. At the Temple, supporters of Jacob arrive with Locke’s body, and "The Others" realize that “Locke” wasn’t who he said he was.

Kate finds herself on the run; Jack must do something that may endanger a friend's life.

On the island, the Man in Black raises questions when he recovers Richard from a trap and finds Sawyer drunk in the house he’d shared with Juliet. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, Locke is frustrated with his situation.

Hurley tries to persuade Jack to go with him on an unspecified mission; Jin has an encounter with an old friend.

Sayid faces a difficult decision; Claire sends a warning to the temple inhabitants.

Locke finds his camp ambushed and his people unconscious, so enlists the help of Sayid before heading to Hydra Island. In the alternate reality in which Oceanic flight 815 did not crash, Sun and Jin leave the Los Angeles airport after Jin’s cash is confiscated, and the truth about their relationship is revealed. Meanwhile, Keamy reveals the money was meant to be payment for killing Jin, who is left tied up in a back room of a restaurant. Can Sayid free Jin in time?

Desmond wakes up and realizes he is back on the island.

Hurley agonizes over what the group's next move should be; Locke is curious about the new arrival in his camp.

Jack questions why the Man in Black is appearing as Locke, and Sawyer and Kate embark on a secret rendezvous to meet with their friends. In the alternate reality in which Oceanic flight 815 did not crash, coincidences continue to unite the characters: Locke is rushed to the hospital after being hit by Desmond’s car and, as Claire arrives for an appointment with an adoption agency, she is approached by Desmond, who recognizes her from the airport.

Jack awakes to find he’s been brought to Hydra island by Sayid and Locke to rescue his friends: Widmore’s team has locked Sawyer and his group in a cage. In the alternate reality in which Oceanic flight 815 did not crash, Locke wakes up in the hospital, where he’s undergone spinal surgery.

Locke's motives are finally explained.

Locke devises a new strategy; Jack's group searches for Desmond.

The battle lines are drawn as Locke puts his plan into action, which could finally liberate him from the island.
