Background: I have been operating a wide variety of lawn mowers since I was 12 years old, and now I'm 28. I just moved to a house with a reasonably sized yard, and my Scott's 14" reel mower which I used for the past 4 years wouldn't cut it (literally, it was getting stuck in the thick grass here). Subsequently, I bought a Fiskars Staysharp Max reel mower (the apparent Ferrari of reel mowers) which I really liked the first time I used it, but the second time out, the blade slipped and self-destructed on the cutting bar. Feeling dejected with reel mowers by now, I bought this GreenWorks electric mower. Why this particular model? While the GreenWorks 16" mower is by far the most well-supported in terms of positive reviews, I felt that it looks like a ridiculous children's toy, and similarly the 100% plastic GreenWorks 20" mower looks like a science project. Seriously, I would feel like such a dork pushing either of those around the yard. So I bought this 19" variant which still bears some resemblance to an actual push mower.
Initial impressions: So the mower arrived today; here are the notables:
-Packaging: This was 100% cardboard (not styrofoam or peanuts), which is nice. It took 30 seconds to assemble and required no tools (just hand-tightening a few knobs once the handlebar was extended).
-Build: Overall great; great size though a little heavier than I expected. Metal where it counts (base, handle bar), but unfortunately still plastic on top. I would have easily paid another $50 even to feel the robustness of all-metal construction. And please stop designing your mowers look like they have a top speed of 100 mph.
-Batteries: The batteries came half-charged, so if I wanted to, I could have tried it out immediately. One of the batteries is 2AH. This is totally pointless considering it is essentially the same size/weight as the 4AH battery. GreenWorks could just as well have not included this one. The other battery included is the 4AH. It cut my entire yard (consisting of 4 parts, each part being approx 30 x 40 ft), and the indicator says it still has half its charge left!
-Operation: Fantastic! Very quiet, much quieter than other reviews would have led me to believe. Nothing like a gas lawn mower. Sound and volume are similar to a somewhat quiet box fan. In spite of the bizarrely dull blade, it cuts very well. Rolls smoothly and is ergonomic. My neighbor came by within the first 10 minutes of me operating it, and it looks like he will be buying one now too.
-Potential improvements: 1) make the body all-metal; 2) don't make it look like a Mclaren formula car on handlebars; 3) omit the 2AH battery and charge less; 4) offer a bagless option which the majority of people will never use, and charge less
-Bottom line: I would buy this again in a heartbeat. The quietness alone is worth the price. Apart from that, it appears very well-built and is a pleasure to use. I will update my review if my opinion on any of the above changes.
I use the battery powered mower first to go around edges and obstacles. The smaller battery is almost useless. I think they should scrap that and just lower the price a little. I did end up buying another bigger generic battery and a second charger so I can mow more yard with it. The battery powered mower is quite a bit weaker than the corded as you might imagine. The corded will take down large bushes and plants if you tilt it back and start with the top. It has impressive power and is fairly lightweight. I live in Florida on half an acre and am mostly dealing with St. Augustine and a little bahia grass. There is a weedy grass in one small area of my yard that kills the battery motor pretty reliably.
The mower is pretty quite like a loud fan really. It's only noisy when hitting thick objects and branches. It's nice to not have any fumes and almost no maintenance. I think I only sharpened the blades once. Also, there is no pull cord. Just push the button and pull up the bar. You can stop frequently for this reason to remove branches and pull weeds or even to drive over the cord safely. Because it is weaker than a corded, you might have to back track in thicker areas or in tougher medium.
Also, when the grass is tall and wet, both mowers can clog easily. My solution is to open the side chute and put the bag on the back so you have two places for the grass to go.
I recommend getting both battery and corded, especially if your lawn gets away from you frequently. If you mow all the time just for fun like Forrest Gump, you might only need the battery mower. I usually have to walk slowly with the battery power mower in the summer, but I can walk very fast with the corded. I am very happy with these mowers, but there is a learning curve with both.
