One-Punch Man
Saitama looks like an average guy, but his problem is anything but average. After training hard enough for all his hair to fall out, he's become so overwhelmingly powerful that no villain can stop him. The thing is, Saitama just does the hero thing for fun. When every enemy goes down with a single punch, it turns out that overwhelming power can be kind of...boring. Can a hero be too strong?
Product Description
One - Punch Man Standard Edition (BD) Saitama is a hero who only became a hero for fun. After three years of “special” training, though, he’s become so strong that he’s practically invincible. In fact, he’s too strong—even his mightiest opponents are taken out with a single punch, and it turns out that being devastatingly powerful is actually kind of a bore. With his passion for being a hero lost along with his hair, yet still faced with new enemies every day, how much longer can he keep it going?

I haven’t watched too many anime series (I’ve started to get really into it this year), so I can’t comment too much on how it compares to other current anime, but One Punch Man has probably the best animation out of any animated show that I have ever seen. The amount of fluidity and action squeezed into each and every episode is mind-boggling. Saitama may be able to cream his enemies with ease, but the pure spectacle that is provided with his enormous power makes these scenes as exciting (if not more so) than any Dragon Ball fight scene (and I say that as a huge, huge Dragon Ball fan). I’ve always been the type of person who prefers story and characters over visuals in any medium (TV, film, video games, etc.) and while this show has those aspects very well done, it also shows just how important visuals can be in a story. You could look at this show and say that “Oh, it’s just dudes fighting. So what if it looks pretty?” And while, again, there are great characters and story moments intertwined, there is also nothing wrong with a show that just wants to look good for the sake of providing heart-pounding action spectacle at its finest. Plus, as someone who is always concerned with a show taking up too much time, this show is only 12 episodes, meaning it’s so short that almost anyone could fit time in their lives to watch it. I cannot recommend it enough! With all that praise for the show out of the way, let’s get into the actual Blu-ray here (I’m reviewing the limited edition).
The set itself is fairly compact with its design, which I actually like, but it’s still very well produced. The standard Blu-ray case, which contains the show on both DVD and Blu-ray (two discs each), is housed in a slipcase that also contains a booklet (more on that in a bit) and six art cards – these art cards contain the artwork of the original Japanese DVDs/Blu-rays and allow you to switch the cover art of your set. The characters are, for those who have seen the show, the following: Saitama, Genos, Speed-o’- Sound Sonic, Mumen Rider (I chose him), Terrible Tornado, and Boros. This slipcase is also housed in its own flimsy plastic cover (that looks and feels quite nice). So, presentation-wise, it’s a nice set, but what about that booklet? What you get is a 96-page color booklet that summarizes various aspects of the story, provides more detailed character and world info, has beautiful artwork and sketches, and has various interviews from the creators of the comics and anime (my favorite part!). It also includes chapter one of the manga, which I thought was a nice touch that, while not super-necessary, could possibly lead to people purchasing the manga – I myself haven’t read the manga, aside from this chapter, although I would like to one of these days. So that’s the packing, which is overall really nice. On to the discs!
As I said earlier, there are two Blu-ray discs and two DVDs, so it’s essentially a combo pack. Contained on each disc is six episodes (it’s a 12-episode series) and various special features. I didn’t check the DVDs (sorry), so I’m only confirming this info for the Blu-rays. The first disc contains clean opening and ending titles, along with subtitled (both English and Romaji) versions to watch. The second disc instead contains a ten-minute interview with staff and cast members (both English and Japanese), which is a nifty little feature. There are also three OVAs (original video animations) per disc that are about 12-minutes each. These are funny little stories that add a little depth to the various characters and I enjoyed watching them very much (and it has a cool folk ending song that’s pretty catchy), but don’t expect the same level of excitement as the main story. The extras aren’t mind-blowing overall, but they’re decent and appreciated. Despite my praise for the set, I have some minor quibbles.
Firstly, the set doesn’t include the first OVA made for the show, Road to Hero, which is a darn shame as it prevents this set from being truly complete. It was released with volume ten of the manga in Japan, so it wasn’t included with their sets either, but it would’ve been cool nonetheless. Secondly, and this will only upset a very small minority of people, there are no dubtitles (subtitles for the English version). There is a subtitles option, but they are for the Japanese version, which means that there are some differences in word choice. It’s not a huge deal since Viz’s translation is mostly accurate, but it’s annoying enough to where I wish it had dubtitles. Again, these aren’t deal breakers by any means, but they were little nuisances.
Do I recommend this set? Absolutely! The show is fantastic and the set is very well-made. It’s a little pricey (cost me $50), but a lot of anime are. If you aren’t too sure about the series, I recommend watching it on a streaming service first. I originally watched it in Japanese on Netflix (there is no English-language option) and re-watched it in English when I bought this set; both versions are great and you can go either way. However you choose to consume it, this show is one of my personal favorites and I highly recommend it, especially with this very nice set. Thanks for reading and have a fantabulous day!
If you're into the combination of superheroes and anime, then this is the show for you. This show is very much like the Dragonball franchise where the main character has battle lust and is trying to reach the heights of his ability.
For the ladies:
This isn't an anime for females. What I mean is, this show is very male-centric. Only a few females appear in the show and they're always over sexualized (Tornado being the only exception). The women in the lives of the main characters are rarely mentioned; no mothers, sisters, girlfriends, nada. This also persisted through season 2 but the main characters did get to know Blizzard (Tornado's sister) better.
Packaging:
The packing I like. There is 1.) the normal plastic case that blu-rays come in. 2. A few posters of the characters. and 3. A concept book/comic book. All of that is put in a cardboard box where there is a cutout in the front showing Saitama (the main character) puching through a wall. What I really liked with the packing was that they have a plastic sleeve covering the cardboard box much like blu-ray and 4K steelbooks have.
Audio & Visual quality:
I only have positive experiences with the AV quality. I won't get too technical (because I'm not a technical person like that), but the audio was crisp and very clear.
Visual surprised me. This is a 1080p blu-ray but watching it on my 4K tv, it felt like it was a true 4K HDR title. Obviously this was due to my blu-ray player upscaling everything but it was amazing that a 1080p blu-ray could look so good on my 4K tv.
Recommendations:
I think this particular set is worth buying if you like the OPM show. It's pricy but I think it's worth it.
