This area used one whole bag. It is a couple hundred square yards less that what the bag says it covers, but we waited a couple of weeks and used the leftovers to fill in the patchy spots. We seeded with just enough time for it to get established before winter. As you can see this area gets basically no direct sun. Now, we DID to a lot of prep work in this area. It previously had a ground cover with mulch on it, and was completely overgrown with weeds, but there was a lot of erosion under the ground cloth, so we pulled all the weeds, scraped off the mulch, and pulled up the ground cloth. Then we let it sit a couple months, pulled out the weeds that came up, tilled and leveled by hand as best we could, added a few bags of fill dirt because the back area was down to red clay, and then seeded. We did drown the area a few times by accident, and missed a few waterings, but the grass still came in great!
It is VERY green though. Especially when it is new, and next to the neighbors brown grass during the winter, it looks almost neon 😂. It is not so obvious in this picture because of the shade and it is mature grass now, but it looked funny over winter.

Once the ground was bare soil, I loosened it up a bit and pulled out any remaining crab grass/dead weed. Next, I sprinkled this Scotts seed (Tall Fescue grass) onto a small section to see what would happen. NOTHING GREW. I was disappointed. Then I read the instructions on the packaging:
1. Spread the seeds/fertilizer into the ground
2. Loosen/turn the soil
3. Water daily as needed to keep the soil moist for the first 2 weeks
I changed my sprinkler to water every 2 days for 5 minutes. End result? Grass grew after a week, and now it has increasingly become fuller! See photos for the results!
Once the grass has grown acceptably, I will change the sprinkler system to water less frequently again (but deeper through cycle soaking) in order to starve the crab grass weed of water and to help the new grass establish deeper roots.
SUMMARY: water often in the first 2 weeks to help sprout the new grass. Once it's established, water less frequently (but cycle soak) so the new grass grows deeper roots.
I was impressed enough, that I went back to Costco to get a few more bags of this EZ seed but found they were completely sold out. So I came to Amazon and bought a few more here. It's been over a month now, and I'm seeing just a few sprigs here and there, but hardly a nice dense patch of grass in the areas I was treating.
I've bought six bags of this stuff so far and am not super pleased with the patchy results of very, very fine grass. In many areas, there has been zero germination. Here's what I suggest. Go to Home Depot, Lowe's or your local farm and garden store and get a big bag of grass seed suited for your area. Get some peat moss and pour it into a wheel barrow. Mix the seed in until you get a nice seed to "mulch" ratio and spread it. You'll save a ton of money and get even better results since you can add more seed to the mix this way. The peat will keep the seeds moist and act as as good growing medium while also helping to protect from birds.
