OurPets Play-N-Treat
The Importance of Play
Cats need mental stimulation from play to keep from being bored and to fulfill their hunting instincts.
Physical activity from play acts as a workout, keeping cats physically fit and enriches the pet’s quality of life and fosters a healthy relationship between the pet and their parents.
Cats sleep most of the day, about 16 hours. When they are awake they need to move around and exercise. In the wild, cats get their physical exercise from hunting. Inside cats receive their exercise from playing with toys that simulate prey. Play provides more than just exercise. Play also relieves anxiety, stress, and boredom. When indoor cats do not have toys to play with, that is when they supplement their playful instincts with anything they can find around the house; curtains, toes, shoe laces, etc.
About the Play-N-Treat Balls
The OurPets Play-N-Treat Balls are made to let cats be cats, allowing them to jump, pounce, and chase their prey. This keeps them busy and positively engaged with the world around them! The only downside to these is that they are VERY stiff. It can be pretty hard to get them open, and beware the pinch hazard, as when these things snap shut, they snap tight.
Even with the stiffness, these are probably one of the best purchases I've made for my cat. They hold 1/4 cup of food, which is what he gets at mealtime anyways, and the bright green makes them easier to find behind furniture.
So I was looking for a new treat dispenser to keep her challenged. The price was right. Unfortunately, she just isn't a fan. For a cat who, as mentioned, often learns to exploit these kinds of toys and get treats out quick, I've found treats lingering int the ball a week later. I'm obviously not a feline so I can only guess as far as why she dislikes this one or how it different from the ones she does like. I think there's a couple of main issues here.
- The ball is too round. You'll notice other prominent and popular treat based toys here on Amazon and elsewhere tend to have unusual shapes and some, such a the mouse shaped varieties by Friskies and Temptations (two toys she's always enjoyed, toys even my parents elderly and lazy cat enjoys as well) also have weighted bottoms. Without a weight or odd shape this ball will roll far and fast, too fast sometimes for the treats to fall out. It also tends to get lost easily for similar reasons.
- The material. The lightweight yet hard, thin plastic of these balls makes them unusually loud and jarring on my hardwood floors. A guest accidentally kicked one and we were both startled and while my cat is not a jumpy or easily startled cat and can be quite loud herself when she plays, I would imagine she finds the sound unpleasant, as would most cats. I can't say I'm fond of it either and would caution not leaving this one out on hard surfaces, especially at night or where it can accidentally kicked by human feet.
- Size. Unlike some reviewers I don't think the hole for the treats to come out is a problem. It's only a touch smaller than the Friskies and Temptations mice I've mentioned and for my cat who is so good at these, too large of a hole would be much too easy. I also don't think, given the other issues, a larger hole would really help much. But the ball itself is rather large, larger than it needs to be given how hollow and unweighted it is. My cat also adored balls and chasing them around the house. But this is larger than any she enjoys playing with. It's not her largest treat toy and she's got some of the bigger puzzle toys also but without a weight or perhaps another hole or two on the other side, it isn't easy to roll around for her.
So to summarize, there are far better options on the market. I took a chance even having really other reviews because I knew this sort of toy is something my cat loves and plays with daily. Perhaps you also have a cat who loves treat puzzles and toys also and thought maybe the issue was that other reviewers cats just weren't into them. I can't promise your cat will dislike it as much as mine, but it wasn't hit with a cat who otherwise adores this type of toy.
If you're new to these types of toys for your cat, I highly recommend trying one of the ones made by Friskies or Temptations (whether you feed your cat those brands or not, both work fantastically with all kinds of treats!) Or perhaps something like the egg shaped "Eggsercisor" found on Amazon.
If your cat is already super into these, give those Trixie puzzleboards a try or even those simple brown boxes with all the holes, that one has always been a favorite of my cats and works well with toys as well as treats. So much so, my cat drops toys in there herself to then fish out and is just as happy to fish out treats from it as well.
There are so many options out there and it's easy to do better. I've only given a second star because the toy is sturdy. The plastic feels cheap but it's been slammed into walls and even tripped over by humans in shoes and it hasn't broken. Plus you get a set of two for such a low price. But it seems to lack appeal and useability from a feline perspective.
I gave it 4 stars as it really is a treat dispenser, as described. Very lightweight. I am accustomed to a treat dispenser that screws. Odd getting used to this.
I also found that the hole is a little large for kitten food, the smaller pieces fall out quickly and my cat got through it in a couple minutes. I just taped over half the hole and it worked better.
UPDATE 10/2014: My cat really loves this and looks forward to getting her treats from it. Unfortunately it breaks so easily. The plastic is so hard, perhaps that's why. Takes some effort to pry it open to put the treats in and have to be careful not to break the tabs. Of course, be careful not to step on it also. Well, both are broken and now trying to decide if I will buy this again or look for something that's not as ridged so it won't break as easily. I think it would be a great product if it didn't break so easily.
