Cons: There is one draw back and the only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5* and that's the absolutely horrible software. Seriously, it's a shame that they put this much time and effort into designing such an awesome mouse just to totally cut every possible corner on the software. The interface is very clumsy, counter intuitive and took me most of the first day of ownership just to get it to do what I wanted it to do. Once you figure it out, it's fine.. but the learning process was unnecessarily difficult. It will do everything they say it will do, it just won't do it without a fight. It was very frustrating to figure out.
The main appeal to me was the ability to save profiles onto the mouse itself. I am a minimalist with it comes to things running on my computer and I like this product because once you figure out the awful software, you can program it, save it to the mouse and then you never have to run the software again unless you wish to change something. You don't need it in your start up and everything you program will follow from PC to PC without any drivers or software. This is a great mouse at a great price.. if they ever fix the awful and ridiculously cumbersome software then this is a slam dunk for a 5 star rating. This mouse has customization and features usually only found on products at twice the price or more. Very hard to beat this mouse at this price point. My primary usage is for FPS gaming and general Windows operation.
*Edit - After about a week of use, I upped the rating from 4 start to 5. I'm still not overly thrilled with the software, but once you get used to it it's not so bad. The reason I edited the review is that the more I use this mouse, the more I find I like it. It's a very comfortable, responsive, and just overall cool mouse.
I decided to try this MX780 because I liked the idea of the modular thumb/side pieces, I set mine up to use the larger thumb/shelf piece for both sides which cured the issue I was having. I also set the palm height to about 3/4 high and I'd say I'm about 90% there in regards to the perfect mouse. I played Cold War last night for a few hours and the mouse definitely improved my gameplay. In full transparency, the mouse still feels a tad small overall for my hands but I'm already getting used to it and so far it's the best our of all the mice I've tried.
For the price this mouse is AMAZING especially because it's not even new technology. I was a little concerned because it's a laser mouse, but honestly for my play style I haven't noticed it being any different, if anything it seems better?
The first thing I noticed right off the bat was how smooth the mouse felt compared to the Corsair models I came from previously. Everything just felt more accurate and precise and I only set the DPI to a fixed 2400.
The mouse buttons are fully customizable in the software (as expected) and getting keys binded was really straightforward. The mouse feels as good or better quality than the Corsair models and probably on par with the g502 hero if not better to be honest. The lighting is bright and more customizable than both Corsair models and the g502 hero I had.
The software is pretty good, honestly I'd say it's on par with iCUE (Corsair's software) but is much smaller in file-size because it's dedicated to the mouse and not an "all in one" for all G.Skill products like iCUE is for Corsair. I suppose that could be interpreted as a con if you want to stay within the G.Skill ecosystem, but if all you have is the mouse it's great because the software is lightweight.
The usability of the software is decent, I'd say as good or better than iCUE (iCUE has some really odd UX patterns that make customization of button bindings (Actions) very clunky feeling. The lighting customization in the G.Skill software is a little wonky but once I got it setup I don't expect to play with the colorization much.
TLDR; if you have large hands and want customization on the thumb/pinky sides, need extra bindable buttons and LOVE RGB this is a DEFINITE pickup.
There are two significant drawbacks to this mouse, in my opinion.
The first is that you really need really small hands for this mouse. My hands are not particularly large, but this mouse is so tiny, it feels like it was made for a ten-year-old. You pretty much have to use a claw grip--it's just too small for even a modified palm grip.
The second issue is the side buttons. They feel flimsy and depress far too easily. I like the audible "click," but it's just far too easy to push them when you don't mean to.
Also, the absence of a dedicated "sniper" button is noted. Sure, you can assign "sniper" to one of the side buttons in the software, but they are really too high on the mouse for it to feel the same.
It's a pretty mouse. I'm learning to live with it...but the size is almost a deal-breaker. It's just so small.
Top reviews from other countries
I respect what G.Skill have done with all the customisation options. It’s a unique, ambitious mouse design that is generally very solid, and great for the price, but could use a few tweaks to the side buttons in a future revision. If you’re a claw-gripper it’s ideal.
The pros:
- A very slick, unique visual design and compact form factor. It’s small, only slightly bigger than a laptop mouse, but bold and satisfying to look at
- Despite its size it feels appropriately weighted (and can be upped a further 8 grams with the included weights). Not heavy by any means, but not so light that it feels cheap
- The overall build quality is excellent and solid
- The matte anti-fingerprint finish both looks great and actually works — no fingerprint traces. It’s textured just enough to stop your fingers slipping, but smooth enough to not feel coarse or rough
- Interchangeable magnetic side rests and slot-in weights, both are easy to install and don’t require any screws
- Adjustable palm rest is a nice touch
- The tracking is great and works on a variety of surfaces without issues. Lots of DPI and polling options
- The software is reasonably straightforward and intuitive (though admittedly I didn’t test the macro functionality)
- Lots of RGB customisation options over multiple zones
The cons:
- Not a deal breaker for me, but noteworthy for some, the RGB isn’t balanced and has a blue bias. Whites look a little blueish, oranges appear almost white, and yellows are a bit green. Can be mitigated somewhat with the custom RGB settings in the software
- If you’re not a claw gripper and/or have big hands, it may be tad too small for you. I tried to adapt to this style and personally found it uncomfortable and ultimately unworkable
- Biggest gripe for me were the side buttons. They’re positioned very high up, which can be okay if you claw, but otherwise the front-side button is basically out of reach for smaller hands. Added to that, there is a huge amount of travel before the button actually clicks, approximately 3-4mm, which is further compounded by the click itself requiring a hefty amount of pressure — more than any other mouse I’ve ever used. So much so that, no matter how I held the mouse, the amount of pressure exerted to click the side button often caused a sideward movement shift in the entire mouse, which is obviously disastrous for precision aiming or pointer movement. No matter what I tried, I just couldn’t adapt to that and, as a lefty, the ambidextrous side buttons were a major selling point that I wasn’t willing to compromise on
As said, if G.Skill revises this mouse in the future, I would definitely reconsider it if they could improve on those side buttons. Less travel, and a much softer click.
Otherwise, it’s worthy of your consideration, and a respectable option, as customisable ambidextrous mice go.
buttons work fine and easily glides other the surface without drag
