Brides of DraculaMarianne (Yvonne Monlaur), a beautiful young French girl, is stranded en route to a teaching assignment in Eastern Europe. She is persuaded to spend the night at the nearly deserted castle of a mysterious Baroness (Martita Hunt). In the castle, Marianne accidentally discovers a man chained to the wall of his room. The Baroness only explains that he is her "sick and feeble-minded" son. Unable to get any further information from the maid Greta (Freda Jackson), Marianne steals a key and sets him free. Once unbound, the Baron (David Peel) fiendishly recruits the undead for his evil purposes until captured by Marianne and the indefatigable Dr. Helsing (Peter Cushing) in this spooky Hammer Films chiller. |
The Curse of the WerewolfOliver Reed portrays the bloodthirsty man-beast who loves by day and kills by night in the gripping gothic thriller Curse of the Werewolf. Directed by horror filmmaker Terence Fisher of Hammer Films, this atmospheric tale of terror follows Reed, the orphaned baby of a maniacal beggar and a mute girl, from birth to manhood, when he discovers his horrible secret. The cursed youth is unable to suppress the dark forces within and when the moon is full, he becomes an uncontrollable killer incapable of distinguishing between friend and foe. Spectacular makeup effects and beautifully photographed 19th Century European locales heighten the suspense of this classic werewolf story. |
Night CreaturesPeter Cushing, Yvonne Romain, and Patrick Allen star in Hammer Films’ Night Creatures, a suspenseful story about a bone chilling curse terrorizing a small town. Captain Collier (Allen), leader of the Royal Navy dispatched at the crown’s request is on a mission to investigate reports of illegal liquor bootlegging in one of the kingdom’s coastal towns. Upon arrival, their mission poses many challenges, among them being mysterious marsh phantoms who ride by night spreading terror to the town. Cpt. Collier’s suspicions are turned towards the town’s vicar, the Rev. Dr. Blyss (Cushing) who seems to be withholding key knowledge. With unexpected twists and turns and disturbing hallucinations the men endure, it’s a challenge till the end to catch the crooked priest in the act and solve the mystery of the haunting poltergeist. |
The Phantom of the Opera (1962)Hammer Films presents the most shocking version ever filmed of the classic The Phantom of the Opera. Mysterious mishaps bedevil a London opera house, but when tragedy strikes during an opening night performance, it becomes clear that these "accidents" are the deliberate work of a deranged madman - the Phantom (Herbert Lom). When Christine (Heather Sears), the young star of a new musical is contacted by the shadowy specter, her producer (Edward De Souza) investigates, tracking the ghostly Phantom to his secret underground lair. Disfigured and nearly destroyed, he now demands his hellish revenge. Christine, his new star, is the Phantom's one weakness, and he pays the ultimate price to keep his love alive. |

ParanoiacNothing is quite what it seems in Paranoiac, a riveting, complex tale of greed, dementia and deceit from Hammer Films, the experts in terror. Rescued from a suicide attempt by a man claiming to be her long-dead brother, a young heiress (Janette Scott) finds a new reason to live. But her relatives have doubts; they think "Tony" (Alexander Davion) is an imposter who's trying to get his hands on the family fortune. Everyone, especially her especially brother Simon (Oliver Reed), has their own secret reasons to suspect Tony. Its an all-out race to see whose designs will win over his vast inheritance. |

A wrong turn leaves Marianne (Jennifer Daniel) and Gerald (Edward De Souza) stranded in a remote Bavarian forest where they have no choice but to accept the hospitality of the hypnotic Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman), distinguished lord of the local castle. Ravna uses his "children" to lure the newlyweds to his liar, and soon, they are plunged into a nightmare of horror and deception from which there may be no escape. Their only hope is Professor Zimmer (Clifford Evans), who calls upon an ancient ritual in a desperate attempt to destroy the vampires and free Marianne from Ravna's power. A lush 19th century setting, masterful direction, and vivid special effects intensify this spooky Hammer Films chiller. |
NightmareHammer Films' Nightmare walks the thin line between sanity and madness, exploring the shadowy world between dreams and reality. As a child, Janet (Jennie Linden) witnessed her insane mother stabbing her father to death. Now a young woman, Janet's recurring nightmares have her convinced she'll follow her mother to the asylum. Accompanied by her schoolteacher Miss Lewis (Brenda Bruce), Janet retreats to the home of her guardian (David Knight), who has hired lovely Grace (Moira Redmond) as a companion to help calm his troubled ward. But Janet's nightly terrors, magnified by the eerie, creaky old house, bring all of her fears chillingly to life. Startling twists and turns reveal that sometimes when you wake up, the nightmare is just beginning. |

The DVD set of these films was a horror in it self for me as I had to get 2 sets to be able to see all of the movies. Universal did a terrible job with the DVD set and the discs would skip, stop, and digitize on certain movies. The Blue Ray does not have that problem.
Now for some info on the movies. Evil of Frankenstein is a favorite of mine. Peter Cushing makes for a swashbuckling Baron in this one which shows a heavy influence from the 40's Universal horror movies. They even have the Monster frozen in an ice block. Well photographed and directed by Freddie Francis.
The Phantom of the Opera was supposed to have Carey Grant is the Phantom. He pulled out and Herbert Lom did a credible job in the role. Hammer spent a lot more money than usual on the film and it did not light up the box office. Terence Fisher directed.
Brides of Dracula again Cushing is here in the role of Van Helsing. Wonderful stuff this movie and it all comes together for a fine evenings fun. There is no Dracula but the Vampire in this story is not a bad replacement. A classic horror with out a doubt.
Curse of the Werewolf another classic by Fisher with a young Oliver Reed in the lead. Hammer's only foray into the Lycanthropy genre. Great production and a well done tale.
The Kiss of the Vampire. Two honeymooners are terrorized by a coven of vampires. Well done film not in the normal set up for a Hammer film which helps make it more fun to see. A real classic vampire film.
Night Creatures is a swashbuckling pirate movie based on the tales of the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. Disney was also doing a version with Patrick McGoohan in the lead. Peter Cushing is in that role here and as usual he does an excellent job. The film is not a horror movie but is a good action movie from Hammer who did several of these.
Paranoic and Nightmare are excellent examples of the Psycho genre of film. Both of them are in black and white and I enjoy them very much. Both deserve a viewing and I believe you will want to look up Hammer's other titles of this sort they made more than a few.

Disco 1: Brides of Dracula (1960) y Curse of the werewolf (1961)
