Now to explain my excitement. We have a toddler little boy and those with small children or know people with small children, you realize that they make messes. My son is no different. He likes to hold milk in his mouth and won't swallow it. He'll just let it drible out of his mouth slowly. Of course he is doing all this in the middle of our family room. Besides that he likes to shake his drink cups and see if he can get juice, milk, soda, or whatever to come flying out. Again, he does this all over the house, but especially in the middle of our family room. As you can imagine our family room looked like someone had taken an old oil pan and dripped it all over the carpet. Not to mention that our carpet is probably the cheapest the home builder could find and it is a lighter shade of brown. Add all these things together and you get one nasty carpet.
My wife has been bugging me for months to rent a carpet cleaner from the store so we could get the family room carpet cleaned. However, being a typical man, I procrastinated and finaly decided that with a small child in the house, we would be renting a carpet cleaner all the time. So with some intensive research I narrowed my search to the Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge.
As I said, it arrived yesterday and as soon as I arrived home from work, I tore the box open and had it put together with 3 screws for attachments in under 5 minutes. It is a very simple machine to put together, and use for that matter. My wife had to go to work at this time, so she wasn't able to see my joy in using it.
First I vaccumed the area and then pre-treated the major spots, after all this isn't a miracle machine. After waiting 10 minutes and watching some Sponge Bob (with my son of course), I began my first Steam Cleaning Adventure!
What I Liked:
1. Automatically stops suctioning and spinning when the return tank is full.
2. The Clean Surge button helps dispense extra solution on bad spots.
3. Suction Power is the best out there!
4. The 5 Spinning Brushes rock, and you can see how fast they are spinning.
5. Attachments and Tools are easy to get to.
6. Two seperate and clear tanks.
Now I did have to re-fill my tank about 4 times to do the entire family room, which basically used up the small container of solution that comes with it, but WOW did it work. The amount of grime and dirt this machine pulled out was sickening, but at the same time made me happy to know that my carpets were getting clean. The family room is the worst room for high traffic, especially from our dog, who likes to come inside from our back door with dirty paws and run across the family room to the front door. I used the Clean Surge on this area, which takes up a lot of solution, but the benefits are worth it! I promise you, that I have absolutely no spots at all! And on top if it all, the carpets were practically dried in about 3 hours.
My wife arrived home and couldn't believe her eyes. The floor looked and even felt brand new. The scrubbing action along with the amazing suction power really fluffed up the carpet and made it feel softer and fluffier. So at 10 p.m. my wife says "Lets do the stairs, too." I was like, right on! So we did the stairs. Again, vaccumed them first, but didn't have any more pre-treater for the spots. So we cleaned them anyways starting at the top of the stairs using the hose and attachment, which also has spinning srubbers, and when we were finished the stairs also looked and felt brand new!
This machine over all is the absolute best money I've ever spent! If you have any doubts on what to buy, let those doubts subside and buy this machine, you won't regret it. Granted it is a little heavy, but it needs to be to be able to clean as well as it does.
Referring to BOTH the Quick Assembly Guide and the Owner's Manual, side by side, made for a concise and easy set up! Just read carefully and follow the directions exactly. The plastic parts are quite sturdy and should last for years. I used it for a "test run" on 3 hallway runners and a wool patterned foyer rug that get used multiple times daily. They were 5 years old, have only had regular vacuuming and had never been cleaned. Being light in color, they had certainly been showing discoloration and spots, etc. and it was way past the time they should have been professionally cleaned!
My cleaner came with a concentrated soap, so I followed the directions to only fill the measuring cup in the clean water solution tank to the 3 oz. line, and not the 5 oz. I only used very hot tap water, not boiling water, which also seemed to work just fine! I also used the gentle scrub cycle, not knowing what the higher power brush setting would do to the pile on my carpet. The gentle scrub worked beautifully, and once the carpets dried, even the original pile seemed to be restored!
I also found that the clean water solution tank did equal what went into the dirty water tank! (That must be an improvement from the earlier models I read about.)
Some helpful tips...important, I did find it helpful, after filling the clean water solution tank and locking the cap on, to tip the tank back over the sink. If water came out of the cover, I wiped up all around the tank and cap seal and then refastened the cap tighter. I kept testing it until I didn't see any leagage before putting it on the machine! Otherwise, you might find excessive leakage when you tilt the handle back on your machine for carpet cleaning!
My 3 runners and the wool foyer rug look beautiful! Just remember to follow the instructions for the number of wet strokes to use followed by dry strokes. I always ended with considerably more dry strokes which really pulled up the dirty water and aided in MUCH faster drying of my carpets!! Technically, there is no need to rinse. Once I saw clear water finally being pulled up during the dry strokes and then no water, the job was done! (I did fill the clean water tank with hot clean water, no solution, to just rinse my wool foyer rug due to the thicker pile. And I was surprised to see that quite a bit more dirty water went into the dirty water tank. I did not rinse my 3 runners at all.)
I'm looking forward to using this carpet cleaner on my light beige master bedroom carpet next! And I probably will use the higher power scrub setting on some of the more well worn areas, and I'm anticipating excellent results from what I have already seen!
Remember to vacuum prior to using your steam cleaner, and again once the carpet is completely dry!
Another tip, the brush mechanism is VERY easy to remove and rinse. I could still see that some hair, etc. was caught when I looked through the plastic casing and no amount of rinsing would get rid of it. The problem was easily solved by using a toothpick to gently remove any leftover fuzz or hair in the plastic casing that wouldn't rinse out around the brushes! Leave your brush casing out to completely dry along with your two water tanks before storing. Then replace the brush mechanism and tanks. It is very easy to do if you follow the instructions and pictures carefully in the manual!
Keep a small hand towel nearby, as some water will leak out on the floor no matter how well you put the machine together due to the hoses, etc. I didn't find that to be any big deal.
Also, remember to expel any water or solution left in the carpet cleaners system. That's in the "storage" section of your owner's manual! Simply stated, you rinse out both tanks, put them back on EMPTY, run your carpet cleaner ON, squeeze the trigger, run the machine back and forth on a clean carperted area several times to expel any solution left in the hoses. Then empty and rinse out the tanks AGAIN, along with the brushes. Let all air dry. Replace the dried brushes and tanks and then store.
I only have one minor complaint. I just wish the clear plastic hood could be removed for cleaning, but the instructions say not to. That thin black nozzle tool that comes with the new machines works well enough if you take your time to clean out the dirt and debris that you see under that plastic hood. The picture in the manual shows you how to do it. (But to be able to remove and rinse that plastic hood off would make the machine perfect!)
All in all, I just LOVE how easy this machine is to operate and it works beautifully. And I'm sure over time it will save me hundreds of dollars. Well worth the purchase and good luck with yours!
Top reviews from other countries
I really liked the two reservoir scheme, one for clean solution and another for the dirty one. It was easy and straightforward to work with. But note, both the containers are one gallon each, but they never get need attention at the same time. First the clean solution runs out, then you replace it and suddenly the dirty tank is full. I tried to refill/empty them at the same time but eventually just attend them as required at different times. To clean the top more difficult side I used may be 15 or 20 full tanks of clean solution, and it took me 4 hours I guess. So, be warned. For the back side I did not clean it so well, so 6 tanks may be what it took.
I was initially thinking about a Bessel machine instead, as it is much more easier to get hire in Calgary, but eventually after reading reviews I decided to go with this Hoover. I am glad now, as I can imagine that with the weird tank/plastic bag setup the Bessel would be much greater a hassle.
I cleaned the machine thoroughly after each use, I is not difficult but as I understand has to be done. Both the tanks are easy to clean and dry. The spinning brushes are easy to remove and rinse in my utility sink. It should be noted that after these two significant jobs the brushes show signs of wear now. I am not sure how long they will last, will see. To clean the intake I installed the dirty water tank and put the machine in my utility sink and opened water. Then sucked water with the machine until the tank was full, this cleaned it well.
It is a significant device but not overly heavy nor too big. It stores neatly in the corner of my utility room in upright position. All in all I think I made a right choice. Hope this helps. I would recommend this machine to people who do not expect miracles from it and who is ready to care for it and follow their instruction. I had a bottle of concentrated Bessel cleaning solution and used it with this machine, no problem, worked well despite the warning in the manual about using only Hoover cleaners.
